Lucas’ Future Is Bright
Born with multiple disabilities that affect his vision and muscle control, Lucas has relied on Easter Seals therapy services since he was 3-months old. Now, at 2-years old, he attends an Easter Seals children’s center where he gets the support and therapy he needs to prepare for success. Lucas has learned how to crawl and making progress towards learning how to walk and talk.
Brandon Is Adventurous
Born with XYY Chromosomal Abnormality, Brandon experiences low muscle tone and a severe speech delay. But that hasn’t stopped him from learning to ride a bike, or a horse for that matter. Brandon is working with his speech therapist to learn how to blow a whistle – an essential skill for children learning to speak. When asked what his greatest personal success has been, his mother proudly says, “When he learned to say ‘Mom’!”
Amelia Loves Her Independence
Since attending an Easter Seals Children's Center, Amelia has learned to use a walker. Her desire to be independent has lead to her now walking, jumping and climbing without any assistance. Amelia is now working on language development by incorporating words, sign language and assistive technology into her daily communications – she’s well on her way to becoming independent!
Ben Has His Eye On Success
Ben’s birth was complicated which caused him to have hypotonia (decrease in muscle tone) and developmental delays. Over the last 3 years, Ben has received therapy to help him gain muscle control – to hold a spoon while eating and learn to hold his head up so he can participate in class activities. Although Ben doesn't speak verbally, he communicates volumes through his eyes.
Myth:
Easter Seals only helps people with disabilities.
Fact:
Easter Seals' mission is to help people with disabilities to live, learn and work in their community. By supporting the entire family, including parents, siblings and care-givers, we build stronger families and strengthen the diversity of our neighborhoods.
Myth:
People with disabilities can't... live by themselves, be productive, work in a normal job, contribute to society.
Fact:
People with disabilities can do many things when they are empowered to do so. You can help remove those barriers. Do your part to educate your friends and family that people with disabilities have the same hopes and dreams as we all do.
