Educators

Food Lion takes pride in being part of the communities we serve. We desire to work together in community based schools with teachers, parents, local businesses and non-profit organizations to help students stay in class and improve their learning by offering supplemental educational programs targeting K-12.

Beginning in August, K-12 teachers and students are invited to review our programs and to participate in the programs that will be beneficial to their age group.

Food Lion's Cart Smart and Connecting with Schools programs are FREE. These programs were designed to have a positive impact in the areas of academics, self-esteem, and sense of responsibility, mental capabilities and motivation.

Roaring to Read

Food Lion Supports National Literacy Month

Get your students excited about literacy! Food Lion, one of the largest supermarket chains in the U.S., and Weekly Reader Corporation Consumer & Custom Publishing share a commitment to children’s literacy. That is why we have joined together to bring you this educational program that encourages children to read for fun. Roaring to Read offers students the opportunity to be rewarded for extracurricular reading. To supplement the goal of getting your students to read more, this program contains activities and teachers’ guides designed for grades K-1, 2-3, and 4-6 that can enhance your language arts curriculum. These activities and lesson ideas meet national curriculum standards for Language Arts that are appropriate for each grade level. We have also included extension ideas and a suggested reading list for each grade bracket. Upon completion of the program, the students receives a Certificate of Achievement and a small gift from Food lion.

To order your kit visit a local Food Lion store and speak to the store manager.

Successful reading and language arts studies give students the opportunity to interact with the selections, analyze what they read, and enjoy the experiences that great literature has to offer.

Food Lion would like for our Roaring to Read program, designed by Weekly Reader, to become a resource in helping build critical literacy skills as well as help teachers provide students with effective, focused instruction. No additional planning is needed. Lesson plans are included.
